UM-Flint’s “UMake the Change” Empowers Student Entrepreneurs Across Flint Campuses
Flint, MI – September 24, 2025 – The University of Michigan-Flint’s Office of Economic Development recently hosted the third annual UMake the Change campus innovation challenge, bringing together student entrepreneurs from UM-Flint, Kettering University, and Mott Community College to pitch bold ideas that address real-world problems through innovation and entrepreneurship.
The initiative, supported by the Mott Foundation, the EDA University Center for Community and Economic Development, culminated in a competitive pitch event where student teams showcased their projects before a panel of judges, mentors, and community leaders. The program encourages young changemakers to develop viable business or social enterprise concepts, with a strong focus on impact, sustainability, and community relevance.
“UMake the Change is more than just a competition—it’s a launchpad for student innovation,” said Paula Nas. “We’re thrilled to see students from all three institutions collaborate and contribute to the entrepreneurial ecosystem right here in Flint.”
The cross-campus collaboration gives students access to workshops, mentorship, and seed funding support. Over the weeks leading up to the final pitch, participants refined their ideas, practiced their delivery, and built connections with local entrepreneurs and business experts.
This year’s entries included innovative solutions in water technology, mental health access, urban agriculture, and green energy, demonstrating the creativity and drive of Flint’s next generation of problem solvers.
UMake the Change not only fuels innovation but also strengthens the ties between Flint’s higher education institutions and the broader community—proving that Flint is a hub of talent, resilience, and opportunity.
